Top 5 Things To Do In Hampi

Have you ever walked through a town where every stone has a story to tell? Or stood in the ruins of an empire so grand, its glory still lingers in the air? If not, then you must make a Hampi tour plan for your coming holidays.

Located in the Bellary district of Karnataka, on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra River, Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, this town now echoes with the chants of ancient temples, the whispers of wind between stone ruins, and the peaceful rhythm of the Tungabhadra River.

Just around 14 km from Hospet Railway Station, Hampi will offer intricately carved temples and majestic boulder-strewn landscapes, as well as spiritual encounters and breathtaking sunrises, and all these stand as a silent storyteller of India’s glorious past.

So, whether you are wandering through age-old monuments or relaxing by the riverside after a long day of walking, Hampi will always leave a deep, lingering impression even after the tour.

1. Hampi Places To Visit

If you ever plan a Hampi tour, do not forget to include the following 5 places in your itinerary.

Catch a Glorious Sunrise from Matanga Hill

Begin your Hampi morning with a hike to Matanga Hill, the highest point in the region and the best spot for sunrise. For the best view, start climbing by 5:15 AM to reach the summit before the sun rises around 6:00 AM. This trail is rocky but manageable for beginners, too.

Once you reach the top, you will witness a panoramic view of the Tungabhadra River, Virupaksha Temple, and ancient ruins bathed in golden light. It’s a serene, spiritual experience with barely any crowd.

Matanga Hill in Hampi is not just a scenic viewpoint; it is a chance to connect with the timeless essence before the tourist rush begins.

Visit Virupaksha Temple

If you are planning a heritage getaway in Hampi, you must visit Virupaksha Temple, a 7th-century marvel dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is the only functioning temple amid the ruins and a must-see on your itinerary.

Try to arrive early to meet Lakshmi, the temple elephant, who gives gentle blessings with her trunk.

Watch the Golden Glow from Hemakuta Hill

If you are looking for peaceful yet stunning places to visit in Hampi, head to Hemakuta Hill to watch the golden glow of sunrise or sunset. Easily accessible and located near Virupaksha Temple, it is ideal for those who prefer a shorter, gentler climb compared to Matanga Hill.

Arrive by 6:00 AM or 5:30 PM to witness the sun painting the boulders and temple ruins in warm hues. The hill is dotted with ancient shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and offers a panoramic view of Hampi’s temples, banana plantations, and stone landscapes.

There are no entry tickets or fixed timings, and it is best visited during golden hour for soft lighting and peaceful vibes. Carry water, wear comfortable shoes, and take time to sit on the rocks and absorb the view.

Explore Royal Enclosure, Mahanavami Dibba, Lotus Mahal & Elephant Stable

Are you planning to explore the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire and wondering which places to visit in Hampi truly capture its royal essence? Then, begin with the Royal Enclosure, a sprawling complex that served as the administrative and ceremonial centre.

It opens from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and houses underground chambers, stepped tanks, and the king’s audience halls. Each of them narrates tales of power and prosperity.

Next, climb the Mahanavami Dibba, a massive stone platform used during royal festivities and Dasara celebrations. Intricate carvings of elephants, dancers, and processions line its sides, offering a peek into regal traditions.

After that, you can head to the elegant Lotus Mahal, which is named for its lotus-like arches and dome. It blends Indo-Islamic architecture and was likely used as a queen’s social space or council hall.

Vittala Temple And Stone Chariot

The Vittala Temple is one of the most iconic landmarks to explore during your Hampi tour, which is known for its grand architecture and intricate stone carvings. Open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, the temple complex is best explored on foot or via battery-operated carts available near the entrance.

The main highlight is the Stone Chariot, also featured on the reverse side of the ₹50 Indian currency note. It is a beautifully carved granite structure resembling a real chariot, dedicated to Garuda.

Inside the temple, you will find the famous Ranga Mantapa, supported by 56 musical pillars that once produced distinct notes when tapped—now protected from touch to prevent damage. The temple's mandapas, sculpted pillars, and open courtyards reflect the artistic brilliance of the Vijayanagara era. Surrounded by broken mandapas and ancient bazaars, the Vittala Temple is a cultural jewel that must be included in every Hampi itinerary.

Trek to Anjanadri Hill (Birthplace of Lord Hanuman)

Anjanadri Hill, believed to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, is a sacred and scenic stop on your Hampi tour. Located in Anegundi, across the Tungabhadra River, the hill is accessed by climbing approximately 600 steps. Start early to avoid the heat and reach the top by sunrise or sunset for breathtaking views of banana plantations, boulder-strewn landscapes, and the Tungabhadra meandering below.
